Our archives

Our archives were created by over 200 constituent businesses, their owners, staff and customers over the past 350 years. They include all sorts of documents, from ledgers and letters to photographs and films.

The archive is a vital information source for the bank, but we also offer research facilities to members of the public, including social, economic, business, architectural and local historians, genealogists and biographers.

Detailed information about the scope of our archive collections is available on this site, arranged according to company name in the section about companies. You can also find out how to contact the RBS archivists with an enquiry.

RBS History 100

Taking its inspiration from the British Museum's History of the World in 100 Objects, the RBS History 100 was a project undertaken by RBS Archives in 2011. Throughout the year, archivists uncovered and shared stories about our history, prompted by items in our unique archive collections.

You can browse the History 100 either by theme or by date. From piggy bank to homburg hat and from parchment charter to tiny passbook, you might be surprised by what you discover.
